Descripción : The present study was carried out to determine the floristic composition, structure, and endemism of the woody component of the protected forest of Huashapamba, Saraguro Canton, Loja Province. The work was executed from December 2017 to July 2018, and included the installation of one hectare sample plot, divided into 25 subplots of 400 m² (20 x 20 m) for trees ≥ 5 cm of diameter at breast height (DBH). All individuals greater than or equal to 5 cm DBH in the plot were inventoried, the diameters at breast height (DBH) and height were measured. The point of DBH measurement was painted in red, and 15 cm above the measurement location on each tree, an aluminum plate with a code was placed. To create a structural profile of the forest composition, a transect of 10 x 100 m was made, registering all individuals greater than or equal to 5 cm of DBH1.30 m, in X and Y distances. The study recorded trunk diameter, height, crown diameter and shape of the crown. Incidences of endemic species were determined by comparative analysis of the species found in the study area with the Red Book of Endemic Plants of Ecuador. Floristic diversity was determined and the following structural parameters were calculated: absolute density (D), relative density (Dr), relative dominance (DmR), frequency and importance value index (IVI). For the forest structure, the basal area and volume were calculated by diametric classes and by species. The structural profiles of the forest were drawn on graph paper at scale. The woody component of the Huashapamba forest preserve research plot included 1,134 individuals belonging to 54 species within 39 genera in 27 families. The forest has a basal area of 30.24 m² / ha, and volume of 215.86 m3 / ha. The most ecologically important species of the woody component of the Huashapamba forest preserve are: Cyathea caracasana, Clethra revoluta and Hedyosmun scabrum. Regarding the diametric classes, the structure reflects the typical inverted "J", which is characterized by the abundance of thin individuals in the smallest diametric classes and few vigorous shafts in the largest classes, which shows that it is a very young forest, in a state of recovery. The horizontal profile of the forest shows a grouped species distribution dominated by Cyathea caracasana and Palicourea sp with a scattering of all other woody species. The vertical profile shows three well-defined strata: dominant, codominant and dominated. There were 6 endemic species, Oreopanax andreanus, Verbesina pentantha, Axinaea sclerophylla, Geissantus vanderwerffii, Miconia hexamer, and Prumnopitys montana. From all the characteristics and findings, it is concluded that it is a young forest in selt-regeneration processes. It is worth protecting the preserve because it is home to 6 endemic species, which justifies the value of conserving this forest as one of the better forest remnants within Saraguro canton.
