Descripción : To guarantee the development of the plants and obtain optimal crop yields, both in quantity and quality, aspects such as: the type of soil, richness of the substrates, pest and disease management, among others, must be considered, as well as knowledge of the needs or water requirements of the crops. The benefits of controlling water requirements help to reduce the environmental impact due to the waste of water in irrigation systems and have a greater uniformity in the growth of the plantation, in the same way, an adequate design of the work can be carried out without oversizing it, and affects the investment of a community or institution in charge of an irrigation project. The research was carried out in the Zapotillo irrigation system, located in Zapotillo canton and parish in the southwest of Loja province, in the Catamayo-Chira hydrographic basin, where water needs were analyzed according to a crop pattern, in order to establish what is the volume and flow necessary for the currently irrigated surface identified in the cadastre. The evapotranspiration of the reference crop (ETo) was obtained from the climatic data of the CHELSA page, calculated by the Penman-Monteith method for a statistical series of 24 years, likewise, it was calculated by the Blaney-Criddle method. with temperature and solar radiation data. On the other hand, the Kc index of the crops for each phenological phase was obtained using the FAO 56 book; and later, the determination of the ETc for each crop from the Kc found and the effective precipitation of the irrigated area, thus obtaining the water demands of the system. A practical case of irrigation programming for sector 3 was developed, considering the month of maximum water demand to determine the continuous flow per hectare. Finally, with the physical properties of the soils, the agricultural calendar was made for each owner according to the time and frequency of irrigation. As a result of the investigation, the volume of water needed by the system according to the identified crops is 75.02 hm3 for 3,561.60 ha in an agricultural year, with an application efficiency of 50%. Having as a conclusion that the gravity method is the most representative of the area. Key words: evapotranspiration, irrigation system, application efficiency, characteristic flow rate.
